Merlion, Singapore

The Merlion, which has a lion head and a fish body, is now a well-known icon of Singapore worldwide.

The fish tail of the Merlion symbolises the country's history as a fishing village while the lion head that of Singapura, the original name of Singapore and which means Lion City in Malay.

Measuring 8.6m high and weighing 40 tons, the Merlion now stands next to One Fullerton.

Thank you to my Mom-in-law, she bought it to me during her recent trip to Singapore.

Is merlion a newly created word for the icon of Singapore or there is a real mystic animal of merlion? We were a Singapore long while ago but did not actually visit the merlion.

The merlion is not the real animal, is a icon / symbol.
