Amsterdam

Do you read that on Sep. 1, 2009 , over a hundred artistically painted elephants have appeared at squares, parks and streets throughout Amsterdam. The life size statues are part of the so-called Elephant Parade — a ‘parade’ of copyrighted, life-size model baby elephants which are being displayed in major cities around the world.

The artistic stampede is meant to raise public awareness and support for the cause of elephant preservation.

Painted by local and international artists, each elephant is a unique piece of art.

On November 12 the elephants will be auctioned at the Westergasterrein by auction house Christies. Proceeds The benefits of the Elephant Parade are donated to the Elephant Family, the largest elephant charity in the world.

The first Elephant Parade was organized in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in 2007. Other parades have been organized in Belgium, France and Thailand, and in 2010 the painted pachyderms will parade through the city of London.
