A treasury of World Masterpiece in Painting
René Magritte 1898 - 1967

Magritte, René, 1898–1967, Belgian surrealist painter. Strongly influenced by Chirico, Magritte developed a style in which a misleading sort of realism is combined with mocking irony. His paintings are dominated by an intense quietude and restraint, despite a startling juxtaposition of images.

Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early-1920s, and is best known for the visual artworks and writings of the group members. Surrealist works feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and non requiter; however many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost, with the works being an artifact.
