I'm so happy to receive several great postcards in my mailbox.
This postcard is one of it.

Anyone have idea about this vintage postcard ?


Look at the marvellous birds stamps and also the nice postmark on the postcard.

Historisches Leipzig

Cocoa / Chocolate

For over 3000 years, Chocolate…like gold, has had a universal appeal.

Chocolate, derived from the seed of the cocoa tree, was used by the Maya Culture, as early as the Sixth Century AD. Maya called the cocoa tree cacahuaquchtl… "tree," and the word chocolate comes from the Maya word xocoatl which means bitter water.

To the Mayas, cocoa pods symbolized life and fertility... nothing could be more important! Stones from their palaces and temples revealed many carved pictures of cocoa pods

The Mayans and the Aztecs recognised the value of cocoa beans both as a drink ingredient and as currency.In both the Mayan and Aztec cultures cocoa was the basis for a thick, cold, unsweetened drink called xocoatl… believed to be a health elixir. Since sugar was unknown to the Aztecs, different spices were used to add flavor, even hot chili peppers and corn meal were used!

Aztecs believed that wisdom and power came from eating the fruit of the cocoa tree, and also that it had nourishing, fortifying, and even aphrodisiac qualities. The Aztec emperor, Montezuma drank thick chocolate dyed red. The drink was so prestigious that it was served in golden goblets that were thrown away after only one use. He liked it so much that he was purported to drink 50 goblets every day!

The cocoa beans were used for currency… records show that 400 cocoa beans equaled one Zontli, while 8000 beans equaled one Xiquipilli. When the Aztecs conquered tribes, they demanded their payment in cocoa!

I found some interesting facts about cod liver oil on Wikipedia.com. Did you know that:

Benefit

• It has high levels of omega 3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA).
• It has very high levels of vitamins A and D.
• It helps to ease the pain and joint stiffness associated with arthritis.
• A 2005 study by researchers at the University of California found that Vitamin D may lower the risk of developing different types of cancers, halving the chances of getting breast, ovarian, and colon cancers.
• It is clinically proven to have a positive effect on heart, bone and brain.
• It helps to nourish skin, hair and nails.
• Cod liver oil taken by nursing mothers improves breast milk by increasing the amount of fatty acids which promotes brain development and helps prevent infections.

Risk

• Pregnant women should not take cod liver oil due to the high amount of Vitamin A, which, in high doses is shown to cause birth defects.
• The risks of hypervitaminosis
• Exposure to environmental toxins such as mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, and other contaminants.

Hand-carved wooden statue

A hand-carved wooden statue, one of a series of five,
which can be seen in the foyer leading to the Mandarin Grill.

The figure is depicted riding on a mythical beast,
and dates from Ch'ing Dynasty / Qin Dynasty / Manchu Dynasty (1644 - 1912) following a style of the Tang period.

Stafford, Royal Baths, 1955

The view reproduced overleaf is from the Francis Frith Collection archieve, containing over 300,000 views of 4,000 towns and villages in Britain between 1860 and 1970.

I visited this lovely place ~ Stafford in year 2002. The first impression for me about the town is 'Tranquil'.

Spangles

Rock 'N' Roll Series

Mars introduced Spangles in 1948, becoming one of the swinging flavours of the 1950s and 1960s

Spangles : Small tubes of individually wrapped sweets, they were available in various flavours - blackcurrant, strawberry, barley sugar, Old English (whatever were those supposed to taste like?) and a mixed fruit pack which for years contained one in a white wrapper covered in question marks which was the "Mystery flavour". Eventually the question marks were replaced by little cocktail glasses, but I've never yet had a cocktail that tasted like a Spangle.
