Wau & Kite Flying @ Explanade, Penang
Saturday. 1st August 2009. 7pm. Esplanade, Penang
This Saturday, colourful kites of various shapes and sizes will fill the sky at Esplanade.
Bring along your family for a great family outing where you are able to enjoy colourful Wau or kites flying and learn the unique skill from our kite experts. The Team KEOP (Kite Enthusiasts of Penang) recently won the World Sport Kite 4th placing. They will demonstrate their latest kites such as 2 giant octupus, 2 giant fish, 1 dragon, 5 rokaku and 11 stack bumble bee plus traditional "wau bulan" . All these will be paraded around the field for your viewing.
Teams from Perlis, Kedah, Johor & Kelantan will be joining in this event. A total of 50 kites are expected to cover the Esplanade field.

Castle of Mir, Belarus
The main facade of the Castle of Mir. Mir Castle is one of the UNESCO site in Belarus. Mir Castle is a unique monument of Belarusian architecture, it was built by duke Ilinich in early 16th century near village Mir (Grodno Region) instead of wooden feudal farmstead, which existed there in 15th century.

The Holy Ghost Church, Tallinn , Estonia
Tallinn became a city in the 13th century, being under Danish rule. The name Tallinn comes from Taani Linn, meaning Danish City. Tallinn became a member of the Hanseatic League at the end of the 13th century, and the city became one of the most important towns in Northern Europe until the mid 16th century, being a strategic trading port town between Western Europe and Russia.
Church of Holy Ghost is the only sacred building from the 14th century in Tallinn that has preserved its original form.
The Church of the Holy Ghost holds an important place in Estonian cultural history.

Novodevichy Convent, also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky Monastery (Russian: Новоде́вичий монасты́рь, Богоро́дице-Смоле́нский монасты́рь) is probably the best-known cloister of Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Monastery, was devised to differ from an ancient maidens' convent in the Moscow Kremlin. Unlike other Moscow cloisters, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

More postcards on Machu Picchu
(Panoramical view of the Huayna Picchu from the agricultural sector)The buildings are thought to have been planned and built under the supervision of professional Inca architects. Most of the structures are built of granite blocks cut with bronze or stone tools, and smoothed with sand. The blocks fit together perfectly without mortar, although none of the blocks are the same size and have many faces; some have as many as 30 corners.The joints are so tight that even the thinnest of knife blades can't be forced between the stones. Another unique thing about Machu Picchu is the integration of the architecture into the landscape. Existing stone formations were used in the construction of structures, sculptures are carved into the rock, water flows through cisterns and stone channels, and temples hang on steep precipices.

The most famous Egyptian pharaoh today is, without doubt, Tutankhamun.
The boy king died in his late teens and remained at rest in Egypt's Valley of the Kings for over 3,300 years.
His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". Often the name Tutankhamun was written Amen-tut-ankh, meaning "living image of Amun", due to scribal custom which most often placed the divine name at the beginning of the phrase in order to honor the divine being.

Machuppicchu New 7 Wonders
Machu Picchu is a city located high in the Andes Mountains in modern Peru. It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below. The ridge is between a block of highland and the massive Huaynac Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend. The surrounding area is covered in dense bush, some of it covering Pre-Colombian cultivation terraces.
Machu Picchu (which means "Old Peak") was most likely a royal estate and religious retreat.
Machu Picchu was probably built around the year 1450 AD, and it only thrived for approximately 100 years. Once abandoned, the site survived only within the knowledge of locals who knew about its existence.
One of the most important things found at Machu Picchu is the intihuatana, which is a column of stone rising from a block of stone the size of a grand piano. Intihuatana literally means ‘for tying the sun", although it is usually translated as "hitching post of the sun". As the winter solstice approached, when the sun seemed to disappear more each day, a priest would hold a ceremony to tie the sun to the stone to prevent the sun from disappearing altogether. The other intihuatanas were destroyed by the Spanish conquistadors, but because the Spanish never found Machu Picchu, it remained intact. Mummies have also been found there; most of the mummies were women.

The Sioux Indian women of the Teton or Western Dakota tribe sustained and perpetuated village life using their agricultural and domestic skills. Among the Dakota women's many skills were porcupine quill work and bead embroidery. They also performed such essential tasks as dressing hides for clothing and shelter, caring for the children and cooking.

UNESCO in CHina ~ Ancient City of Lijiang
As a state-level city og historical and cultural magnificence, Lijiang is located in northwestern Yunnan Province, and covers an area of 3.8 square kilometers. The city has a history of 800 years. At the end of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), the Naxi ethnic group moved here and built city.
The building in the city have their unique styles, featuring the cultures of the Han, Bai, Naxi and Tibetan ethnic groups.
And the Dongba culture, Naxi Ancient Music and Baisha Frescos are the testimonial of the long and rich traditional culture of the city.

Nagoya-Jo Castle, Nagoya
I've received the postcard from Tanouchi Seiko of Japan.

Nagoya Castle was constructed on the orders of Ieyasu TOKUGAWA in order to secure an important position on the Tokaido highway and to ward off attacks from the direction of Osaka.
Construction was completed in 1612, and the castle is typical of those built on flatlands.
In May 1945, during the air raids on Nagoya in the Second World War, most of the buildings including the main and small donjons, and the Hommaru Palace, were burned down. Fortunately, however, three corner towers, three gates, and most of the paintings on the sliding doors and walls in the Hommaru Palace survived the fire, and have been handed down as Important Cultural Assets.

UNESCO China ~ Potala Palace
One of the famous shrines of Lamaism, the Potala Palace is situated on Red Mountain in Lhasa, Tibet.The Palace was constructed in the seventh century, and is the quintessence of ancient Tibetan architecture.
The complex is divided into two sections : the Red Palace and the White Palace. It is the treasury of Tibetan culture and arts, and many precious cultural relics are kept here, such as Sutras, images of Buddha, and Thangkas, etc...

I've been one of the Tibetan Monastry in XiNing Province in my Silk Road trip.
The interior was excellent, riched with colours, hand sewn images.
But, we were not allowed to take any photos.
May be they want to keep it as mystery as possible.
We supposed to visit another gorgeous Tibetan Monastry in XiaHe.
However, the Monastry was closed for visitors due to political issue.

UNESCO in China ~ Chengde Mountain Resort
The Chengde Mountain Resort was the summer residence of the Qing (1644-1911) emperors and imperial families. Covering an area of 5.64 square kilometers, the resort is the largest intact imperial garden in China.
The construction of the resort began in 1703, and was completed 90 years later. There are some 130 structures in different styles in the resort. Scattered to the east and north of the Mountain Resort are many magnificent and spectacular temples in different styles.
