Peranakan porcelain was exported from China as a result of a specialized market in South East Asia, mainly in Malaysia and Singapore.

Such porcelain were made in China in the late 19th and early 20th century specifically for the Straits Chinese or Peranakan communities on both sides of the Straits of Malacca. In Malaya during the colonial era, the Peranakan were principally found in Malacca, Penang and Singapore.

Baba Nyonya 2 : House for the Ancestral Altar

baba nyonya_ancestral

More about Baba Nyonya
The Language spoken by the Baba- Nyonya is a mixture of Malay and Hokkien. The Baba friend I met was not speak Mandarin.

The craftsmen were specially brought in from China to produce this elegant architecture.

The ancestral altar hall is a profusion of intricate wood carvings bathed in gold leaf.

The rumah abu or house of ashes is a small square like box cupboard on top of the table. It was the home of the ashes of the ancestors and ancestral tablets.

Baba Nyonya 1 : Bridal Chamber

baba nyonya_bridal chamber

I love everything about Malacca/Melaka, the culture, food, building, people, scenery and etc.
I went to The Baba Nyonya Heritage (private house converted to a small museum) in my last trip, a very remarkable experience. During the visit, we were not allowed to take any pictures. However, I managed to bought some postcards.

The Baba Nyonya Heritage
48/50, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock
75200 Malacca.
Malaysia

Introduction about the Baba Nyonya
The Babas and Nyonyas are descendants of the Chinese who intermarried with the local women.

The men are known as the 'Babas' and the women 'Nyonyas'.

The Babas and Nyonyas are said to be very Chinese in spirit and tradition but Malay in form. Also known as the 'Straits-Born' Chinese or 'Peranakans', they speak the Malay patois which is Malay mixed with Chinese phrases.

A traditional Baba Nyonya Wedding or Peranakan Wedding is loaded with complex rites preparations and numerous ceremonies which lasts up to 12 days! It’s a very tedious process (both in preparations, time and money) that most of the younger generation prefers to skip some of the ceremonies.

Similar like their Chinese counterpart, the Peranakan put a great emphasis on choosing auspicious dates and times. However, their taboos are much more and strictly observed than the Chinese.

Edward Gorey

Drawing by Edward Gorey

Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an author and illustrator of many unique books that often have the appearance of children's stories, but are usually much
more ominous, even sinister, and yet oddly humorous. He is probably best known for his drawings used for the animated opening to the public
television show "Mystery!". He has also done illustrations for hundreds of books by other authors.

The count arrived with it in Bruges on April 7, 1150 and placed it in a chapel he had built on Burg Square.

Itsukushima Shrine, Hiroshima

img-Z02080246-0001

Miyajima (also known as Itsukushima), measuring 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) in length and 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) in width, is an island in Hiroshima Bay. With Itsukushima Shrine standing in an inlet backed by the surrounding mountains soaring steeply from the coast, the island is known as one of the three most scenic places in Japan along with Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture and Ama-no-hashidate in Kyoto Prefecture. Since ancient times, the island of Miyajima itself has been worshipped as a god, and living there was prohibited. Even today, Miyajima is considered to be sacred and some of the ancient rules such as no cultivation or burials on the island still remain.
